Back-to-School Welcome from our Board
Dear SFUSD Families and Family Champions,
With a new school year starting, we at SF Parents want to extend a warm welcome to new SFUSD families and a warm welcome back to families returning to our schools! The beginning of a new school year can bring a variety of feelings, including excitement, nervousness, and curiosity.
At SF Parents, we are excited about continuing to elevate the voices of families and caregivers in SFUSD; we are determined to advocate for student-centered decision-making in the coming year; and we feel tremendous gratitude for all the educators and advocates who seek to improve outcomes for all our children.
As we enter our organization’s third (!!) year, we know we have much work to do together. We continue to listen to parents and caregivers about the issues that matter most to you, provide opportunities for you to learn more about these important issues in SFUSD, offer updates about the Board of Education and the upcoming election (mostly through our sister arm SF Parent Action), and host fun community-building events. We know that the issues still resonating with most of you are:
- increased accountability around a student outcomes focus from our School Board and district leadership,
- better management of our district’s finances to be fiscally solvent,
- a strong desire to see improvements in literacy outcomes at SFUSD, and above all else,
- wanting and needing for each and every school to be joyful places of learning for our students, teachers, and school communities.
As part of our efforts to inform our SF Parents community, we wanted to share a few resources that you might find helpful as you start off the new school year:
And it wouldn’t be an SF Parents email without an action item. If you’re feeling up for it, please email us and let us know what goals and student outcomes you want to see the SFUSD Board of Education incorporate into their Vision, Values, & Goals planning work: See pages 9-13 of this presentation for where they’re at. They are eager to hear from parents and the community; we’ll be compiling your feedback in a public letter to them in September.
