What We Know as of November 21, 2025
On 11/21, SF Parents met with SFUSD district leaders to gather additional clarity on the plan to reinstate 8th grade Algebra in Fall 2026. This update follows renewed public attention after a recent SF Standard article raised questions about timeline, readiness, and consistency across middle schools.
For those who may be newer to this issue: In February 2024, the Board of Education voted to restore Algebra I to 8th grade and redesign the secondary math pathway. This decision reversed a decade-long policy—implemented in 2014—that removed Algebra from 8th grade districtwide. SFUSD is currently in year two of a three-model pilot intended to inform the full rollout scheduled for Fall 2026.
Below is a summary of what we learned, what’s working, and what still needs attention.
Summary of Key Takeaways
SFUSD confirmed:
- The district remains on track to offer Algebra I for all 8th graders in Fall 2026.
- The three pilot models are completing their second year of implementation.
- Stanford University’s research findings on the pilots are expected in January 2026.
- A revised math policy—including how 8th grade Algebra will be structured—will come to the Board of Education for a vote in February 2026.
- No significant delays are anticipated at this time; however, communication and implementation consistency remain areas of concern.
Timeline Moving Forward
January 2026 – Stanford releases its evaluation of the pilot models
February 2026 – Board of Education votes on updated secondary math policy
Spring–Summer 2026 – Schools receive guidance, professional learning, and implementation support
Fall 2026 – Algebra I available to all 8th graders across SFUSD
2026–2028 – Ongoing monitoring, evaluation, and potential refinement of the model
What’s Working Well
Pilot Models:
All three pilot models have been consistently implemented for two years. Every middle school currently has access to at least one pathway model—though the specific form of access varies by site (during the school day, online, after school, or summer).
Commitment to Rollout:
District leaders reiterated that the Fall 2026 reinstatement date remains firm.
Current Challenges (Not Expected to Delay the Rollout)
Communication Gaps:
Families report receiving inconsistent or unclear information about pathways, timelines, and expectations. SFUSD is preparing updated materials, with districtwide communication slated to begin in January.
Coherence Across Middle Schools:
Levels of readiness and support vary by site. Some schools need stronger implementation of curriculum, coaching, and intervention strategies.
Instructional Preparation:
SFUSD acknowledged uneven execution of the new Desmos/Amplify curriculum, particularly in ensuring teachers move from independent problem-solving to guided synthesis. The district is strengthening professional learning to address these gaps.
Updates on 6th–7th Grade Math
SFUSD does not anticipate major changes to core 6th and 7th grade curriculum at this time. However, the district is focused on:
- Strengthening Tier 1 math instruction
- Providing more principal and teacher professional development
- Improving intervention strategies aligned with the core curriculum
Will Students Take Algebra I and 8th Grade Math?
This remains undecided. The February 2026 policy proposal will determine whether Algebra I is offered as a standalone course or through a concurrent/combined model.
What Families Can Expect on Communication
January: Stanford research findings released; district begins public communication
February: Board considers the new math policy
Spring: Schools receive planning guidance
Late Spring/Summer: Family-facing materials and placement information released
Looking Ahead
We will continue to monitor district progress closely between now and Fall 2026. Restoring access to 8th grade Algebra is a major win for students and families, and we’re grateful to the many community advocates—including the Guardians—who helped make it possible.
SF Parents remains committed to championing strong, coherent math instruction from kindergarten through 8th grade. For questions or feedback, please reach out at hello@sfparents.org
