Weekly updates from SF Parents
Dear SFUSD Champions and Supporters, As we’re all returning from Spring Break, SF Parents is ready to dive into the last few months of the school year focused on just two things. We hope to see the same level of focus from SFUSD. Read on below to find out what they are and how you can help. First — that every SFUSD student receives strong reading and math instruction.
At the April 14 Board of Education meeting, the District is proposing to extend the timeline for reaching its reading and math goals from 2027 to 2028. These goals were set in 2022 and were ambitious, pushing the system toward stronger outcomes for students. We want to acknowledge the progress, much thanks to the campaign pushes from parents and teachers through our SF Kids Can’t Wait campaign. SFUSD has invested in high-quality instructional materials, expanded access to high-dosage tutoring, and increased support for teachers through instructional coaches at every elementary school, along with ongoing professional development. This kind of system-wide change is complex and takes time. At the same time, there is still SO much more work to do. Nearly two years into the K–5 literacy program rollout, only 67% of classrooms are consistently using the materials. In math, a year into the new programs, the District has not yet shown consistent implementation across schools or clear evidence of what is working. Successful districts pair new curriculum with strong supports like coaching and tutoring—and track all the way down to the classroom and student level. That kind of laser focus on implementation and results will be critical to ensure SFUSD’s work leads to stronger literacy and math outcomes for our city’s public school kids. |

Second focus — that the district improves its financial situation.
It’s no secret that the district’s finances are still in trouble, and schools are seeing that with the budgets proposed for 26-27 school year. We’ve been strong, proud advocates for the past five years for the district to operate a balanced budget—rather than grow its structural deficit—tying dollars and resources closest to where they matter most: to support teachers and instruction and to improve student outcomes. Join SF Parents on April 23 for a virtual town hall bringing together key leaders, including Superintendent Maria Su, Board of Supervisors President Rafael Mandelman, Mayor’s Office Chief Kunal Modi, Phil Halperin of Silver Giving, and Jill Golub of BMWL Public Affairs to get real with the SFUSD community on the status of our overall local and state school fundingand opportunities to mobilize together and go after more of it!
We’ll cover everything from state funding formulas to local ballot measures, and the specific levers that could unlock more resources for SFUSD. Whether you’re new to school funding or already engaged, you’ll leave with a clearer understanding of how it all works and, most importantly, how you can do something that will have a real, meaningful impact on dollars for our students. |
As always, we are grateful to the parents, teachers, and SFUSD community of advocates and supporters that makes this collective work for our city’s kids possible. SF Parents believes that our city’s public school system can be among the best in the nation. Together, we’ll turn that dream into reality. We look forward to “seeing” you on the 23rd!
