8/12/25 – SF BOE Meeting Summary
Public Comment was perhaps more interesting than the two primary agenda items, as important as they were. During public comment we heard from site administrators (principals), who made their case for pay raises; it sounds like their salaries have been frozen while teacher and central office salaries have not. Having been onsite a lot in the last few years in varying capacities, I see how stressful their jobs can be, especially in the last year given all the budget issues and system migrations, and moving into this year as many of them are losing AP resources they have been accustomed to having. While this is not directly a SF Parents campaign issue, retaining good principals is important to the stable functioning of the schools our kids love.
Fiscal & Operational Health Update – ERP (Frontline) presentation found here
The transition to Frontline is moving along generally well; 97% of payroll has gone through successfully in this initial implementation period.
- As Commissioner Gupta pointed out, for the 3% impacted by errors, SFUSD needs to work hard to ameliorate the issues, and as Dr. Su said in her address “it is my #1 priority that we are paying staff, we cannot continue to do this to them”
- It sounds like Frontline is “working” (e.g. technically), but some things haven’t yet been coded into it to accurately reflect how SFUSD contracts are written (e.g. when extra time or vacation days are paid)
- The District is still using two systems, Frontline and SAP (Empower), the latter to pay out some supplemental (e.g. non-scheduled) payments like extra time. This is inefficient, as the District is still paying SAP, and as Dr. Su stated, she need to finalize a plan on how they fully transition away
- It came out in public comment that principals are feeling the burden of having to train their staff on Frontline, but don’t feel fully trained in it themselves
2025-26 Executive Cabinet & Leadership Organization Chart – Org Chart Presentation
Given the budget realities and recognizing student outcome needs, Dr. Su has been streamlining and re-aligning her executive team, as discussed in past meetings and outlined here. She has mapped the Goals & Guardrails to each of these leaders as outlined on Slide 5. This is a positive step towards increased accountability, as is the full org chart also shared in the presentation.
- There are still key vacancies, especially the Deputy Superintendent of Educational Services & School Operations, CFO, Head of SPED
- Head of SPED currently being interviewed, have good candidates
- There is still a lot of turnover within the department, perhaps understandable given the chaos of the last year
