Public commenting is an important opportunity to make your powerful voice heard.
Let the S.F. Board of Education and SFUSD Leadership know how parents and caregivers feel, how the district can do better for our city’s kids, our teachers, our schools!
Meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month (with some exceptions when they are moved to different dates).

How to Make Public Comment:
During the “General Public Comment” portion of the meeting, you will:
- In-Person: Fill out a speaker card in advance and hand it to SFUSD staff sitting at the dias. They will call your name when it’s your turn. Not everyone gets called on every time–sometimes there are more commenters than time allows for.
- By Zoom: It is based on BOE discretion if there is virtual public comment. Press the “Raise Your Hand” button to get in line to speak. When it is your turn, you will be called upon and unmuted. A box will appear and you will press “okay” to allow yourself to unmute.
- By Phone: It is based on BOE discretion if there is virtual public comment. “Raise Your Hand” by pressing “*9” to ask to speak. When it is your turn, you will be unmuted.
Template for Your Clear and Powerful Public Comment
Below is a basic template for public comment. Speak your own truth. Public commenters usually have one minute to speak.
- My name is ________, and my child is in __ grade at ______ school.
- I would like to ask you to bring attention to __________________. (If you’re looking for ideas on current issues impacting our students, check below, updated by SF Parent Coalition for each regular meeting)
- Tip: The one minute goes quickly. One minute of speaking is about ~130 words.
