Weekly updates from SF Parents

It’s not every newsletter we get to share such awesome news.

We have a WIN for students to announce. First (ICYMI), back in October, after a year of research and preliminary advocacy by many of YOU (thank you!), the Board of Education adopted an early literacy improvement goal in their 5-year Vision Plan for the district.

And, JUST THIS WEEK: We have an additional win to announce. New SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Wayne sent SF Parent Coalition a formal response to our Literacy for All petition and postcards, where he officially committed to the changes necessary to finally improve literacy outcomes at SFUSD.

This is BIG news. While the efforts were already underway to begin responding to recommendations by outside literacy auditor TNTP, we now have word from our new superintendent that he is on board with the recommended changes, and that he will support them, rather than pause or worse, revert to the old ways. Check out some important excerpts from Dr. Wayne’s official response:

While SFUSD doesn’t have the greatest record of following through on its promises, we know that with this incredible, passionate network of parents holding them accountable, we will make certain that they see this work alllll the way through.

That’s going to take more effort, which is why our literacy campaign continues. If you haven’t already gotten involved, consider signing up today. We’re looking for School Leads and Campaign Action Team members to continue this important work of informing families and holding the district accountable. On the immediate horizon, we have a research meeting on the 16th where we hope to hear more from SFUSD on what they’ll be doing during this interim period (curriculum adoption is a lengthy process to do right) to support any student, in K-12, who isn’t yet reading at grade-level.

If you’re interested in getting more involved, please sign up today:

Thank you to all of the parent, teacher, student, and community advocates who helped make this important advocacy work a success this year. It’s truly making a difference for our students. We couldn’t be prouder to be doing this work together with you.

It’s hard to believe we’re approaching the end of 2022 already. Have you donated to support SF Parent Coalition’s work this year?
