SF Parents Expect Literacy
and Math Proficiency for All
Every child in San Francisco deserves excellent reading and math instruction—they can’t wait any longer. We’re parents holding SFUSD accountable for real results.
- Urgency & Equity: SFUSD must close learning gaps, especially for Black, Latino/x, Pacific Islander, and low-income students.
- Accountability: Parents demand clear progress we can measure and see.
- Solutions That Work: With the right support and leadership, every student can learn at grade level.
- Parent Voice: Change happens when families speak up together.
- Parent Power: Change happens when families lead. Our campaign and Read to Lead workshops center parent voice and leadership.
San Francisco families want excellent and equitable schools that support teachers and help every student succeed. But the numbers show too many students aren’t learning to read and do math at grade level—and things aren’t improving fast enough.
SFUSD students do better than the state average:
- 53.7% of students can read at grade level (vs. 47% statewide)
- 45.6% of students meet math standards (vs. 36% statewide)
- SFUSD ranks higher than other big city districts like LA, Oakland, and San Diego
Serious gaps remain—especially for Black and Latino/x students:
Black Students:
- Only 18.3% are reading at grade level
- Just 11.2% meet math standards
Latino/x Students:
- Only 26.8% can read at grade level
- Just 17.6% meet math standards
These numbers show many kids—especially from underserved communities—aren’t being prepared for their future. The gaps are wide and not closing fast enough. SF can and must do better.
