test – SF Parents Newsletter

Dear SFUSD Champions and Supporters,

We hope you are all enjoying your summer and the time away from the classroom. The SF Parents team had a great 4th of July holiday break, but is now back in the office kicking off the busy Back to School season! Sharing just a few updates and upcoming opportunities below.

AB 181 Signed Into Law

While not directly a district update, it will affect our city’s kids. Last week Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation making the biggest changes to California’s TK–12 governance system in more than a century. The new law is intended to create clearer lines of accountability by giving the State Board of Education greater authority to direct the California Department of Education, while narrowing the role of the independently elected State Superintendent of Public Instruction. The hope is that clearer accountability will lead to faster decision-making and a stronger focus on improving student outcomes. We’ll be watching closely to see how these changes affect school districts, including SFUSD, in the years ahead.

Plans move forward for SFUSD’s new K-8 Mandarin Immersion school

At last month’s board of education meeting, the district presented an updated timeline for the launch of its new K-8 Mandarin Immersion school. Plans include the announcement of a temporary location for the school this September, with a permanent location announced in the Spring, and the first students attending the school starting in Fall of 2027. This effort is part of the district’s broader work to evaluate its school portfolio and ensure programs better reflect family demand while attracting, retaining, and supporting students across San Francisco. Read more details on the district website here.

Help Shape How San Francisco Invests in Children & Families

The Department of Children, Youth, and Their Families (DCYF) is recruiting community members to serve on the Children and Youth Fund Oversight and Advisory Committee (OAC), which helps oversee the City’s Children and Youth Fund and makes recommendations on how funding should support children, youth, and families. If you’re a parent, caregiver, educator, youth advocate, or community member who wants to help shape these investments, we encourage you to apply.
