SF Kids Can't Wait Progress Tracker

SFUSD Has Made Changes, But They Are Not Yet Showing Up Consistently In Classrooms Or Improving Outcomes For Students.

These demands focus on building a clear, consistent system so every student gets strong instruction and support, and every family has clear information about their child’s progress.

The Clock is Ticking

SFUSD set ambitious goals and time is running out.

These aren’t just nice goals, they’re important commitments to our city’s students, with a deadline of 2027.

Latest Update

March 2026

In response to the latest reading and math data, we’ve updated our SFUSD Tracker and the results are not where they need to be. (Read our summary and BOE notes here.)

  • English Language Arts curriculum (K-5) use in classrooms remains at about 67% of classrooms, with no meaningful increase from last year
  • In Middle School math, instruction is uneven, with only about half of classrooms on pace and fewer demonstrating strong practices
  • Support for teachers and communication with families vary across schools

The biggest gap right now is ensuring these changes are implemented consistently across classrooms.

SF Kids Can't Wait Progress Tracker

These demands focus on building a clear, consistent system, so every student gets strong instruction and support, and every family has clear information about their child’s progress.

Our Promise: We’ll update this tracker with green, yellow, or red indicators.

When the district delivers evidence-based progress, we’ll celebrate the wins. When they don’t you’ll know, and so will everyone else.

Where We're Focused Right Now

Over the next 90 days, we are focused on pushing for progress on our demands around high-quality curriculum implementation and ongoing support for teachers.

We are calling on the district to:

  • Develop and communicate a clear plan to increase consistent use of curriculum across all classrooms
  • Strengthen the focus on foundational skills in reading and math
  • Ensure professional development and coaching are cohesive, focused, and aligned to the curriculum
  • Provide consistent, high-quality support for teachers and school leaders
  • Share elementary school math data so there is visibility into implementation
  • Outline a clear plan for next school year to improve implementation and student outcomes

This work is central to our broader demands and where we believe SFUSD can make the most immediate impact on student outcomes.

Our Promise

We’ll update this tracker with clear indicators of progress.

When the district shows evidence of improvement, we’ll reflect that. When it doesn’t, we’ll make that visible.

Our Demands

We're Tracking Four Core Areas That Must Work Together To Improve Student Outcomes:

Every student identified as behind in reading or math receives small-group or intensive support during the school day using evidence-based interventions.

How We’ll Know We’re Successful:

  • Students who are identified as behind are consistently receiving targeted intervention during the school day across all elementary schools.

  • Students receiving interventions demonstrate measurable progress toward grade-level reading and math.

  • The District has a clear plan for how universal screener data is used within its MTSS framework to identify students early, place them in the appropriate level of support, and monitor progress.

  • Implementation of this MTSS approach is consistent across schools and demonstrates that interventions are improving outcomes for students.

  • SFUSD shares transparent, disaggregated data on intervention access and student progress by focal student groups, including SPED, to ensure accountability and equity on a quarterly basis.

At every elementary school, STAR, SBAC, and report card data are reviewed with families during both fall and spring conferences.

How We’ll Know We Were Successful:

  • The district provides training for families on how to understand STAR assessment data
  • By Fall 2026, SFUSD includes SBAC reading and math proficiency data on report cards.
  • District-wide reading and math performance data are shared publicly to ensure transparency and build trust.

By June 2026, all K–8 classrooms are using SFUSD’s new reading and math curriculum consistently and as intended.

How We’ll Know We Were Successful:

  • The district publicly releases an implementation audit or report confirming:
    • Curriculum use in at least 95% of Math classrooms.
    • Curriculum use in 100% of Reading classrooms.
  • Grade-level expectations, including required instructional minutes are clearly defined and publicly shared.
  • The District has a plan to support combination classes to ensure integrity of curriculum implementation and student learning.

All TK–8 teachers and paraprofessionals receive paid, ongoing training and coaching on new curriculums, and have access to professional development funds.

How We’ll Know We Were Successful:

  • By June 2026, at least 90% of K–8 teachers and paraprofessionals have completed paid professional development related to the new Math curriculum.
  • Teachers report that the PD is ongoing and useful, not one-off or check-the-box.
  • SFUSD develops clear guidance on combination classes and monitors their use to ensure they are manageable and effective.
